Getting Your Store Thanksgiving-Ready

This year, Thanksgiving falls on Monday, October 14th. Of course, we’re referring to our Thanksgiving, here in Canada, which takes place about a month and a half prior to the one celebrated by our southern neighbours in the United States. While the respective Thanksgiving holidays aren’t celebrated at the same time, the traditions are pretty similar. At the heart of them all are usually big family gatherings that include big turkey-laden feasts.

Naturally, it’s a great time of year to celebrate what we’re all thankful for. And, as a business owner, you should certainly be thankful for such an occasion. It gives you the opportunity to promote new inventory, special discounts and in-store events. What do you have planned to get your place of business Thanksgiving-ready?

Set up decorative displays.

With every fall season comes the imagery for multi-coloured leaves, pumpkins and turkeys. Browns, oranges and yellows are the norm when it comes to selecting a colour scheme to decorate your place of business with. Be sure to decorate your displays with Thanksgiving-imagery to ensure their eye-catching nature.

“Creating different levels on your display table allows for the eye to travel smoothly and see the product better,” says Nona Raybern of RSVP International, “Crates, milk cartons, or even plastic stands help with this effect, depending on the mood you want to convey…For a classic holiday like Thanksgiving, take advantage of the rustic look of wooden crates. You can find these at your local craft store or even get them from wineries and dairy farms for very inexpensive.”

Reach out to your loyal customers.

This is an advertising must for all retailers no matter what time of year it is. Never forget your loyal customers, as they are the people who will always be the most likely to support your latest initiatives. Never leave them in the dark. Call, text, email or jump on social media to invite them to your Thanksgiving sale or special event. Securing repeat business should be a constant practice.

“How will you make sure your best customers visit your store more than once?” asks Rieva Lesonsky on SmallBizTrends.com, “Reach out to them early in the season (or even before the season). For example, invite your best customers to a special shopping night before Thanksgiving to offer a more stress-free shopping experience.”

Utilize letter boards.

To add that much more of an eye-catching flavour to your Thanksgiving-themed display tables, add letter boards with special messages. Of course, it’s wise to list item names and their prices on these boards. But, it’s also a clever idea to spell out special messages like “We’re thankful for our customers” to gain greater favour with shoppers.

“The great part about these little letter boards: you can make them say WHATEVER you want,” notes Raybern, “That means every holiday can have its own little display board, from Thanksgiving to Halloween to Easter. The letters are easy to change and the board itself is easy to keep clean. You can pick one up at any local craft store for under $20.”
