Getting Creative With Your Summertime Marketing Methods

Beautiful, glorious, bright and sunny summer – it all officially gets going on Sunday, June 20th! For many Canadians, the summertime is the best time of year. Needless to say, we suffer with far too many months that are full of chilly temperatures. Add the stay-inside requirements of this awful pandemic and you have a recipe for “can’t wait to enjoy the summer” feelings all over the country!

As a business owner, it’s definitely wise to take advantage of the summer when it comes to your advertising strategies. Are you looking for some ways to get creative with your summertime marketing methods?

Launch temperature-based sales.

Using the daily temperatures as ways to determine discounts is a great way to keep a good buzz going for your company. This advertising technique will encourage shoppers to think of your store as often as they check the weather. Consider such sales events as “25% off when it’s hotter than 25 degrees”. The possibilities here are unlimited!

According to Jason Hall on FiveChannels.com, the temperature-based sales idea originated in Nashville, Tennessee by a store called Goodbuy Girls. It gave customers $10 off their purchases of $100 or more when the temperature reached over 100 degrees (nearly 38 degrees Celcius!). “You can also run rainy day sales, to encourage people to come inside and get out of the bad weather,” suggests Hall.

Send your customers on vacation.

You don’t have to literally buy anyone plane tickets. Simply bring the vacation atmosphere to your customer base! After all, the pandemic isn’t encouraging most people to travel. And as Michelle Nickolaisen points out on Grasshopper.com, travel might not be in the books for many people this summer because they’re busy with kids.

“If you’re talking to overworked business owners, a series of entertaining posts or photos based around the idea of the ‘office staycation’ could increase engagement and customer loyalty (which can, in turn, lead to increased sales),” she writes.

Host a summer photo contest.

If you’re not yet using such social media platforms as Instagram and Facebook, you’re missing out. These two online giants are used by millions of people all over the world every day. They’re both known for their video and photo-posting capabilities. Instagram, in particular, is popular for the sharing of pics and vids.

Host a photo contest that encourages consumers to post pictures of themselves doing their favourite summer activities. Request that a hashtag containing your company’s name is included. From those posts, select a winner and offer a grand prize.

“This encourages personal engagement, gives you free user-generated content, and will help bring a lot of traffic to your social media accounts,” says Hall, “You can even create an added incentive, like a prize or discount for the one who gets the most likes and shares.”
